Itamaracá Island is situated 50 km from Recife. In middle way to Itamaracá Island we stop in the historic city of Igarassu (1535) at 35 km from Recife. In Igarassu we visit the church of Saints Cosmo and Damian - the oldest church in Brazil - and the Franciscan Convent of Saint Antoine where one keep historic XVII century paintings. In the way to Itamaracá we go by the small fishermen village of Itapissuma, to enter in the Island of Itamaraca that is linked to Itapissuma by a bridge over Santa Cruz Channel. In Itamaracá Island we have a brief stop in Engenho São João - first steam sugar mill in Brazil. After that we visit the Manatee Preservation Center where we can see the manatees in big aquariums. At last a visit to Fort Orange, a XVII century fortification over the sea, made by the Dutch.
